Kangal Dog Breed Information

The Kangal is a big, strong breed of dog that comes from Turkey. It is also called the Kangal Shepherd Dog. The Kangal has a big reputation as both a guardian and a friend because of its strength, protective traits, and gentle personality. The black mask, muscular body, and short, dense hair that is usually fawn to light brown make this breed stand out. This breed is both physically strong and loyal and brave.

An Overview of the Kangal Dog

  • Physical Strength: The Kangal boasts a muscular and robust body, capable of reaching up to 190 pounds. Its size and muscle mass are indicative of its sheer physical power.
  • Bite Force: One of the highest among dog breeds, exceeding 700 PSI, which underscores its capability as a protector.
  • Endurance: Exceptional endurance, bred for guarding livestock over extensive terrains, capable of working in various climates without showing signs of fatigue.
  • Temperament: Known for its loyalty and protective nature, the Kangal is calm and controlled, showing aggression only when necessary.

Origins and History

The Kangal is named after the Kangal District in Sivas Province, Turkey, where it is believed to have originated. The Kangal’s role in its native land has been crucial for the protection of livestock. Shepherds have historically used it to protect sheep from powerful predators like wolves and bears. As a guardian, it does a great job because it is very strong, has good hearing, and can protect the flock on its own.

Physical Characteristics

Kangals are among the largest dog breeds, with males typically standing between 30 to 32 inches at the shoulder and weighing between 110 to 145 pounds, although some can be larger. Their physical strength is matched by a formidable bite force, which is one of the highest among canines, exceeding 700 pounds per square inch (PSI). This enables them to protect livestock effectively against predators.

Temperament and Behavior

Despite their intimidating size and strength, Kangals are known for their calm and controlled demeanor. They are fiercely loyal to their families, protective of their charges, and gentle with children, making them excellent family pets. However, their protective nature means they can be wary of strangers and require socialization from a young age. The Kangal’s intelligence and independence also mean they respond best to experienced handlers who can provide firm, consistent training and sufficient mental and physical exercise.

Care and Lifestyle

Due to their size and energy levels, Kangals are best suited to homes with plenty of space where they can roam and exercise. They are relatively low-maintenance in terms of grooming, thanks to their short coat, but they do shed, especially during the change of seasons. As working dogs, they thrive on having a job to do, whether it’s guarding livestock or being an active companion for hikes and outdoor activities.

Health

Kangals are generally healthy and robust dogs, with a lifespan of around 12 to 15 years. Like all large breeds, they can be prone to hip dysplasia, and because of their deep chests, they may also be at risk for gastric torsion (bloat). Regular veterinary check-ups, a healthy diet, and adequate exercise can help keep them in good shape.

  1. Quite an interesting read. I had no idea our saint bernard is listed as one of the strongest breeds. We had one we couldn’t keep in the yard. He would climb our gate and get out of the yard. He was such a big dog he would sprain his front shoulders when he hit the ground. We had to medicate him to relieve his pain. We had to eventually find a new home for him on an acrerage. He kept running away trying to get back home to us. His new family didn’t give up on him and found a way to keep him there until he got used to his new surroundings and eventually stayed put.
