Ownership and Manufacturing of Wellness Pet Food

Wellness is a pet food brand that falls under the ownership of Wellpet LLC, a pet food company whose headquarters are located in Tewksbury, Massachusetts. The Berwind Corporation owns Wellpet LLC. The establishment of Wellpet LLC came about in 2008 following the merger of Eagle Pack Pet Foods and Old Mother Hubbard. Both companies were founded in 1926 and 1970, respectively.

Eagle Pack Company is responsible for manufacturing most of Wellness’s products at their own manufacturing facility in Mishawaka, Indiana. However, during a recall in May 2012, it was discovered that some of Wellness’s foods were being manufactured by Diamond Pet Foods, one of the world’s largest pet food manufacturers.

It is noteworthy to mention that Wellness faced a legal battle over their use of the term “human grade” to describe their pet foods. Although they emerged victorious from the lawsuit, many other pet food manufacturers have refrained from using this terminology since then. However, the absence of the term “human-grade” on a dog food label does not necessarily indicate lower quality. The AAFCO does not consider “human-grade” as a standard, and if food is fit for human consumption, it is referred to as “edible”. Nonetheless, pet food formulated for dogs may not be nutritionally adequate for humans, and vice versa. Therefore, what truly matters for your dog’s food is the quality of ingredients, the amount of nutritious protein used, the presence of good sources of fats and antioxidants, and more. Fortunately, Wellness meets all of these criteria, so let’s delve further.

What ingredients are in Wellness Pet Foods?

The Wellness Pet Foods Company boasts that their food recipes are based on being able to provide a nutrient-filled and high-quality meat-based dog foods. It is a grain free

product and the meat in it is deboned turkey and chicken, as well as chicken livers and meal from chicken and turkey. Turkey and chicken meal are meat concentrates and actually have 300 percent more protein than meat in an unprocessed form.

Wellness Pet Foods also has potatoes in it as a source of complex carbohydrates. There is also canola oil and tomato pomace. Canola oil provides Omega-3 essential fatty oils and tomato pomace provides fiber for good digestive health. Pomace is considered controversial, however, because some believe it is only cheap filler and has no value.

The Wellness Pet Food Company formula has met the nutritional profile needed for adult dogs as certified by the AAFCO.
