1. The Breed Didn’t Originate in France

French Bulldogs actually originated in England, but France is responsible for some of the most distinctive looks for the breed.

Many toy or small bulldogs were kept by lace-makers in the Nottingham area of England, including the original version of the French Bulldog.

When the lace-makers migrated to other areas of the world, including France, they took their tiny pups along with them.

The Bulldogs were bred with other breeds, likely terriers, which resulted in a more even-tempered dog with a friendly expression.

Frenchies are known for their “bat ears,” which didn’t start in France either. American breeders set them as the standard for the breed instead of the typical “rose ears” that bulldogs have.

2. They Come in Nine Different Colors

When you imagine a French Bulldog, you may think of a pup with tan or black fur. French bulldogs come in nine different colors, with black being a very rare bonus color you may come across:

  • Brindle and white
  • Brindle
  • Fawn
  • Cream
  • Fawn and white
  • Fawn brindle

3. French Bulldogs are Brachycephalic

Frenchies are a brachycephalic dog breed, which means they are “short-headed.” They tend to have breathing difficulty because their soft palate obstructs their airways. This affects how they eat their food.

French Bulldogs are known for their little snorts and loud snoring, and that’s a result of being this type of dog breed. It also affects how they can exercise since they have trouble breathing.

4. Frenchies Have Delicate Stomachs

French Bulldogs are also known for being a little, well, fragrant due to their more sensitive stomachs. There are certain types of foods a Frenchie should avoid, so they don’t become overly gassy.

They may love eating cheese and other dairy products, but it won’t make their tummy feel great. Beans, veggies, and low-quality dog food are also known for leading to little Frenchie farts.

5. They Are Very Sensitive

None of us likes criticism, but Frenchies are particularly sensitive to it. They don’t take well to raised voices. Positive reinforcement is the best way to train a French Bulldog.
