Believe it or not, dogs possess a fair share of behaviors which often seem to be quite perplexing.
If you are a dog-owner like me, you are definitely aware of this fact. Right?
Just a couple of months ago, Jack (my adorable Doberman) started giving me a tough time with his uncanny conduct. I was never so frustrated with him like it happened at that time. I was simply going mad to understand what does he actually want to convey?
At one moment, he was chasing his tail and the next he was yawning abnormally. I got so scared to leave him alone for even one minute! It was drastically affecting my daily routine.
Finally, I thought of figuring out the meanings of such weird behavior of him. When speaking to vets and my friends didn’t work, I started reading various books on dog’s behavior and exploring the internet.
Fortunately, I was able to get a clear elucidation!
If you are wondering like I did about the weird behavior of your pet dog, the following information will certainly help!
1. When it Chases its Tail:
Well, this was the first behavior from Jack which astonished me! Afterward, I came to know that it’s nothing but just a way of playing among dogs. They make sure that their excess energy is getting expended while doing so.
However, make sure that your dog is not doing it excessively. You should be able to divert it with a pet accessory or something! If you can’t do that, it indicates certain health disorders.
The dog might be suffering from anal gland problems or flea allergy dermatitis. In that case, you should immediately consult to a veterinarian.
2. When it Howls:
You might be aware of the fact that wolves howl to communicate with other members of their troop. It’s quite natural!
But why do dogs make such high pitched sound?
It can be a behavior passed on to them from their ancestors. Above that, experts even suggest that howling seems to be pleasing for dogs. There is nothing to worry for the dog-owners like you and me!
So, if your dog howls, don’t panic at all.
3. When it Turns Away While you Hug:
When did you hug your doggie for the last time?
Did it turn away?
Your dog is definitely upset!
Yes! This is one of the commonest sign that your dog is not happy. Research shows that it indicates stress in them. There are two other signs (showing the whites of their eyes and lowering their ears) through which they indicate that they are upset.
If you darling is showing any one of these signs, take it out for a walk. Buy some new toys for your dog or let it eat his favorite pedigree. Of course, your pet dog is just like a baby. To bring it back to its normal mood, you need to make your dog happy!
4. When it Digs the Ground:
If you sometimes witness that your dog is digging the lawn outside your home, there can be more than one reason behind that. They do it to find out an escape, for tracking animals, to find out a comfortable place for lying down, in order to hide something etc.
Your dog can often show such a behavior during the night. You should not get scared at all. It is very normal!
5. When it Eats its own Poop:
What will be your first reaction?
For you and I, it is something completely disgusting to even see our pet doing that. On the contrary, for dogs, it is a completely normal behavior.
Your dog can behave in such a way because of various reasons. It might be the fact that it has seen its mother cleaning it in a similar way and just trying to mimic her. Also, it might do the same out of fear, it can be curious about something. Also, dogs may try to figure out any distinct smell in their feces by doing so.
So, if you find your dog is doing the same, don’t think that it has gone mad!
5. When it Sniffs Another Dog’s Ass:
If your dog is smelling your neighbor’s dog’s ass, don’t think that it is weird. Well, you should remember that each and every dog has a different ass stink.
The two glands which are present around their anus indicate many details starting from dog’s sex, their type of diet to their health’s condition and mood.
So, dogs often smell each other’s ass to get all such information. It might sound quite abnormal to you but that’s how God created them!
6. When it Stares at you:
Do you find your dog staring at you sometimes? It doesn’t indicate anything abnormal unless its eyes are not gazing furiously. Normally, dogs do so to indicate its owner that it wants to get showered with love and affection. However, when he stares at you with angry eyes, he might harm you. Be careful!
7. When it Sits on your Feet:
You might sometime find your dog sitting on or between your feet.
What do you think then?
It might seem to be a possessive behavior for you. Whereas, actually, it is not! Often, it shows anxiety and nervousness in your dog. Perhaps, your dog is trying to feel safer while staying close to you.
In such a scenario, you should try to figure out whether there is anything scary present around. If it is so, try to take your dog away from that place. If it is not, a referral to any veterinary behavior specialist will help you.
Lastly, there are many other behaviors shown by dogs which might seem to be weird for you. For example, running in circles, being obsessed with socks, barking at the mailman always etc.
All these behaviors also have some meaning behind. So, before you start panicking, be smart enough to understand the message that your dog is trying to deliver.
You will certainly end up having a gleeful taming experience!
